ZineMonth is here again!
Find Your Next Favourite Zine!
Once again, ZineMonth (ZiMo) returns to give creatives from all over an excuse to put together that tabletop role-playing zine together that they've been meaning to get around to all year and crowdfund a print run or raise funds to help finish it off.
The rules are pretty simple:
- Make a zine (or plan one out)
- Release it, make it or launch a crowdfunding campaign to fund its creation
This is a creator-run community event that includes videos, blog posts, podcasts, itch.io jams and a Discord server all to help zine-makers make the zines of their dreams — if you want to do something for it, go for it!
Zine Creator Support
This year IWTP...G! is playing host as the "Official" ZiMo website but there's plenty of other places and things to check out:
- The Discord server is there to chat with other creators to help each other out
- A YouTube playlist of zine workshops to help you dive into the scene
- Official ZiMo logos from Feral Indie Studio are being hosted on atypicalfaux.com
- Crowdfunding can happen in all sorts of places including:
- BackerKit's Zine Month tag
- Crowdfundr's Tabletop Nonstop event
- Gamefound
- itch.io using itchfunding and adding your project to the ZiMo 25 jam
- Kickstarter's Zine Quest event
- A spreadsheet of stats from previous ZiMos/Zine Quests if you like graphs and data
- Add your zine project to IWTP...G! and check out everyone else's!
You can edit any details about your game after you've added it (if you add details about number of backers etc, that will also help with the spreadsheet if that's any incentive).
A Little History
ZiMo came into being after Kickstarter showed why it wasn't a great idea to put all your eggs on one platform by cancelling/postponing their Zine Quest event in 2022 at very late notice and going all-in on blockchain.
A group of publishers — Charlie and Alex C, Bella/Nuclear Obelisk, Sam Sorensen and later joined by Tony Vasinda — got together and set up ZiMo with the following aims:
-
Education: provide information about where creators can host their zine, from pre-order sites, digital distributors, or crowdfunding platforms.
-
De-Monopolization: Creating additional avenues of how projects are funded and spreading awareness of where projects can be found and financed will create a healthier community.
-
Democratization: The indie TTRPG community is a global one and everyone should have a fair opportunity to have their ideas and creations shared, not just the financially successful ones.
Backerkit have added a Zine Month tag to their site (and host their own Pocketopia event in March) and Crowdfundr overlap ZiMo their Tabletop Nonstop event so there's plenty of options on where you can host your campaign.
So, now...
